Splitting the front yard and backyard into two zones made the lighting much easier to live with
I redid most of our landscape lighting last year and originally planned to put everything on one transformer.
Once I started laying out the wiring, I realized I didn’t really want the front walkway and backyard lights running on exactly the same schedule every night.
I went with the dual-zone transformer instead and put the front path and entry lights on one zone, then the backyard steps and garden spots on the other.
That turned out to be much more useful than I expected.
The front lights come on earlier and stay fairly consistent, while the backyard lighting is something we use more when we’re actually outside.
I also mounted the photocell where it gets a clear view of the outdoor light instead of tucking it behind the landscaping.

The current 300W Dual Zone Landscape Transformer converts 120V AC to 12V / 14V AC and provides two separate lighting zones. It includes timer programming and an external dusk-to-dawn photocell, making it useful when areas such as front yard/backyard or path/step lighting need to be separated.

Choosing a landscape transformer starts with the total load of the connected lights, not simply the size of the yard.
Two properties of the same size can require very different transformer capacity depending on the number and wattage of the fixtures being used.

Start by adding the rated wattage of all landscape lights that will be connected to the transformer.
The current LightingWill range includes:
150W / 170W
200W / 250W
300W / 400W
500W / 600W
for single-zone systems. Larger dual-zone versions are also available.
Do not size the transformer only from cable length or fixture count. A system with ten low-wattage path lights may require less capacity than a smaller system using several high-output landscape spotlights.
Also check the required output voltage. Current models provide combinations such as 12V/14V AC or 12V/15V AC, depending on the transformer.

Single zone or dual zone — when is the second zone actually worth it?
I’m planning path lights along the driveway plus a few spotlights around the backyard.
Right now I could probably run everything from one transformer, but I’m wondering if I’ll regret not having separate control later.
Is dual zone mainly useful for larger properties, or does it make sense whenever two areas need different schedules?

The main reason to choose Dual Zone is control, not property size.
A Single Zone transformer is appropriate when all connected landscape lights can operate together on the same schedule.
A Dual Zone model makes more sense when you want to separate areas such as:
Front yard and backyard
Path lights and step lights
Entry lighting and garden accents
The current 400W Dual Zone model provides two zones, 12V/14V AC output, timer programming and an external photocell.
For comparison, current Single Zone models use one lighting zone with timer control and an internal photocell.
